WHAT WE DO

Social Gatherings is a grassroots initiative based in Sydney that brings together refugee and migrant women with local women leaders from business, law, media, health, and social enterprise. We meet over a simple, shared lunch – prepared by acclaimed chef Claire van Vuuren at Bloodwood Restaurant – where food becomes the bridge to connection, friendship, and opportunity.

These lunches create a safe, joyful, and welcoming space for women to share their stories, build networks, and discover ways to support one another.

WHY IT MATTERS

Women arriving in Australia from refugee and migrant backgrounds often face barriers to opportunity, from limited networks to cultural and language challenges. At the same time, Sydney women in leadership roles are looking for meaningful ways to contribute to their community. Social Gatherings brings these groups together. Refugee and migrant women gain access to networks, advice, and opportunities. Local women share their experience, contacts, and encouragement. • • Together, we foster lasting relationships that empower women to thrive in their new country.

OUR AIMS

  • Connection: Build genuine friendships and supportive networks.
  • Empowerment: Identify areas where refugee women want input and support, and provide tailored solutions through our networks.
  • Community: Create a safe and welcoming space where women can laugh, share, and learn from each other.
  • Sustainability: Develop a model where costs are supported by sponsors and partners, ensuring inclusivity and continuity.

WHO IS INVOLVED

Each lunch brings together 12 women from refugee or migrant backgrounds and 12 women from local leadership roles. Past participants have included lawyers, academics, councillors, human rights advocates, entrepreneurs, and media professionals.
